Melbourne Shopping with Molly Meldrum, VICTORIA

Australian music legend Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, the guru of Australian music has well and truly put Australia on the world map with its recognition and appreciation of contemporary music. Molly has been presenting the best and latest in music to Australian audiences since the 1960s.

Molly shops in is hometown of Richmond, in Victoria. Richmond is one of the oldest suburbs in Melbourne, sitting on the northern edge of the CBD behind the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Richmond's multicultural past has helped to mould this suburb into a lively and varied shopping area. Examples of this can be seen in the little Saigon style of Victoria Street; the heart of Melbourne's Vietnamese community, the shopping and dining of Swan St and Bridge Road, to the abundance of Greek Restaurants and hotels and pubs that are scattered across the suburb.

Swan Street and surrounds are home to about 30 bargain outlets stocking clothing as well as furniture and general merchandise. Recognised by the Melbourne Age Newspaper in 1998 as Melbourne's No. 1 icon, Dimmeys has been a beacon for bargain shoppers for 147 years. Dimmeys' current day owners have maintained the original owner's simple philosophy - that is to give the customer a bargain. So you can buy national brand and imported clothing, manchester, homewares, giftware, footwear & hardware at 40-70% off recommended retail prices. The buyers are expert at finding national brand over-runs, end of ranges and goods with slight imperfections in large quantities which enables them to sell this merchandise for bargain prices.

The shops on Bridge Road are great for fashion. They're open seven days a week, including the Quick Brown Fox which has some great vintage clothes Another take on Richmond is the fashion 'Direct Outlet' heaven. There are over 20 factory shops where you will find all the big Australian brand name in clothing, jewellery and shoes down along Bridge Road (between Punt Road and Church Street). Absolutely huge savings can be made from purchases at any of these stores and retail outlets.

Fashion isn't the only thing that is good in Melbourne. There are some great places to buy fresh food on Victoria Road and this is where Molly likes to buy his ingredients to cook up a feast!
