Phillip Island, VIC
Airing Date: May 10th, 2008
Melbourne's Eco IslandsJust one and a half hours drive from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne city lies a bay of islands, virtually untouched by visitors. First up is Popular Phillip Island, a favourite escape for Melbournians and famous for it's penguins and race track. For the rest of us Aussies its myriad of wonders still remains relatively unknown. This includes Australia's largest colony of fur seals and one of the best places to view them is from Nobbies Centre. With 20-25 thousand fur seals at seal rock, their remote control camera helps when trying to get up close and personal.
Right next door you'll find Phillip's neighbouring islands of Churchill and French.
Historic Churchill Island is connected to Phillip by bridge and offers a tranquil escape complete with historical homestead and working farm. French Island, once a prison farm, now boasts one of Australia's largest koala colonies.
