Faraway Bay, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Airing Date: Jun 27th, 2005
On the north-west corner of the Australia, there is a place so remote it rarely makes it onto a map. It's so far away from anywhere it's called Faraway Bay.
Faraway Bay is in the remote Kimberley Region of Western Australia, 280-km north-west of Kununurra.
The Bush Camp Faraway Bay resort was developed by Bruce and Robyn Ellison who are long time residents of Kununurra.
Bruce came across the stunning location in 1986. His dream was to create a private and isolated resort unlike anything else in the region and the Bush Camp opened in 1996.
All eight secluded bush-style cabins enjoy 180 degree views of the ocean. Guests wake up each morning to birdsong and drift off each evening to gentle ocean sounds. There is a maximum of just twelve guests at any time, so privacy is ensured.
The cabins sleep two people comfortably and there is a central modern amenities block with flush toilets and hot & cold running spring water.
To reach Faraway Bay, visitors fly by light aircraft from Kununurra, landing on the private airstrip.
You can also take a Pearl & Diamond Coast Air Safari that takes in the magnificent Kimberley scenery. You then drive by 4WD for the final few kilometres to The Bush Camp. Then you can leave your money in your wallet because once you arrive at Faraway Bay everything is paid for.
The day often starts with breakfast in the open air Eagle Lodge, a perfect venue for lounging, dining and daydreaming. You can stake your claim on a hammock for the day or take a refreshing plunge in the cliff top freshwater pool.
At Faraway Bay going out for the day takes on a whole new meaning.
You can head for the King George River in Diamond Lass, the ocean going cruiser and take a look at the King George Falls or potter around the corner in a dinghy and fish the tidal creeks.
Other activities you can incorporate into the itinerary include: exploring different isolated beaches, some bush walking, boat to Lesueur Island or Butterfly Bay or take a scenic flight of the Pearl & Diamond Coast. The options are endless.
If guests prefer to do nothing - they can do that too.
Faraway Bay facts: On Tuesday 15 March 2005, Faraway Bay Bush Camp was hit by Cyclone Ingrid.
It sustained a lot of damage - cabins were destroyed down to floor level and the lodge lost all its verandas.
The camp was shut down for repairs and after some very hard work by Bruce and some dedicated volunteers, it re-opened only four weeks later.
