4WD Kalbarri Wildflowers, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Airing Date: Sep 1st, 2006
Located 586 km north of Perth is Kalbarri - a relaxed fishing village which in spring becomes surrounded by some of the most beautiful wildflowers in Australia.
Western Australia is one of the greatest centres of flowering plant diversity in the world. There are more than 12,000 different types of wildflowers listed and there are many more yet to be discovered.
Beginning in late June, the dry, parched sand plain heath of Kalbarri National Park bursts into bloom. Well known and much loved wildflowers include Blue Leschenaultia, Banksias, Everlastings, Kangaroo Paws and Dryandas - native only to the south-west of Western Australia.
You can see the wildflowers on a Tumblagouda Tag-Along Tour at Murchison House Station. You can join station owner, Callum on a 'trough run' as he drives all over the property at least twice a week checking on stock.
The tour takes 6 hours, stopping along the way to enjoy points of interest. Enjoy views of the Kalbarri townsite, traverse the Pillawarra rangeland and explore unique rock formations in this rugged station country.
Inaccessible for decades, tracks have been cleared to allow access to the north bank of the Murchison River, with views across to the National Park.
This tour is suitable for drivers with any level of experience and is a great day out for the whole family. Instruction is available on request and two-way radios are issued so that every vehicle is in contact. This allows your guide to point out features of interest throughout the journey and allows you to comment or ask questions.
