St. Kitts- The CaribbeanSt. Kitts- The CaribbeanSt. Kitts- The Caribbean

Intoxicating natural beauty, sunny skies, warm waters and white sandy beaches combine to make St. Kitts one of the most seductive spots in the Caribbean. The island of St Kitts is 178 sq kilometres and is about eight times the size of Australia's Lord Howe Island . As a result, St. Kitts remains un-crowded, unspoiled and regarded around the world for the excellent preservation of its ecosystems.

Christopher Columbus first spotted St. Kitts in 1493 when it was populated with native tribes, but the Europeans did not colonize until the British arrived in 1623. Its strategic location and valuable sugar trade led to an advanced and luxurious development that was considered amongst the best in the Colonial Caribbean.

Learn some history of the island at the only UNESCO World Heritage site in the Leeward Islands, the grandiose Brimstone Hill Fortress. The Brimstone Hill Fortress, constructed intermittently between the 1690s and 1790s, is the remains of a large, complete military community of the 18th century. As such, it is a time capsule of international significance.

The prominent Citadel is one of the earliest and finest surviving examples of a new style of fortification known as the 'polygonal system'. It is lined with 24 cannons and provides excellent views of St Eustatius and Sandy Point Town. Plantation homes have been transformed into grand, intimate inns and there is no finer example than the 17th century sugar plantation, Ottley's Plantation Inn

.

Ottleys Plantation Inn, originally a 17th-century sugar plantation, is situated on 35 acres of rolling lawns and gardens in the foothills of Mt. Liamuiga. Very much a family operated affair, the inn is owned and operated by Nancy and Marty Ottley, along with their two, young daughters, and Nancy's sister, Karen. Nancy and Karen's parents also have an involvement in the property.
