Okavango Delta, BOTSWANA
Airing Date: Oct 4th, 2004
The Okavango Delta is one of the world's greatest wildernesses. The Okavango River stretches along 1000 miles and is home to an abundance of rare African wildlife.
If you're keen to explore the delta, forget the armchair safaris and the escorted jeeps. There's no better way than on horseback, and on this safari you can experience riding past packs of elephants and buffalo, and through shallow waters teeming with crocodiles and hippos. You'll also see some of the world's most spectacular scenery.
During the five day safari you'll be amazed at how close you actually get to all these remarkable creatures. The riding experience is varied; at times you'll get up close to lions or hippos, and at other times you'll feel extremely relaxed and at peace.
When it gets too hot to be on horseback, you can enjoy a cruise in a traditional mokoro (a wooden hand-made boat) through the thick swampy waters of the delta. You can also join one of the safari's jeep trips and come across more of the local wildlife, including elephants and families of lions - now that's one time where a vehicle does come in handy!
Your accommodation is right in the heart of the Delta. Kujwana Camp offers spacious safari tents with an African-style ensuite. In the evenings, gather around the campsite for a hearty meal and refreshing drink while the sun sets for another day on the stunning Okavango.
If you're concerned about dangers of the delta, rest assured. Safety is the number one priority for everyone throughout the safari. All riders are led by qualified professional guides and a 375 rifle is carried on all the rides. The camps and vehicles have radio communication and guides ride with hand held radios. A demonstration is given at the beginning of the safari with a talk on how to handle big game situations.
