Fernando de Noronha is an island in the Atlantic Ocean, around 354 km off the Brazilian north coast.
The whole island is a National Park and is UNESCO protected. In order to protect the island's crystal clear waters, rich marine life and beaches, there are strict preservation rules. There is a limit to the number of visitors at any one time, you are unable to swim at some of its beaches and there are only a certain amount of cars allowed on the island, so if a new car is brought in, the old car has to be removed.
On top of this, visitors need to pay a conservation tax for every day of their stay and the taxes increase the longer
the stay and anyone hoping to migrate to the island needs to show how they can benefit the island by living there! There is very little traffic and no high rise buildings.
The big attraction of Noronha is the pristine environment - the clean water, beaches and the native marine life. There are 600 spinner dolphins living in the Dolphin Bay.
There are no big hotels on Noronha. Visitors can expect to stay in a pousada, which are similar to homestays and most are quite basic.
