When my baby smiles at me I go to...

The harbour defining Rio de Janeiro, on the south-western shore of the Guanabara Bay, has been dubbed one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The ever-growing city of Rio spreads some of itself around the 143km circumference of this awesome bay, along a narrow alluvial strip between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.

The dark blue waters are studded with rocky outcrops - the best known of which are Corcovado and Sugar Loaf Mountain. The locals are so proud of their geologically defined home that they say, "God made the world in six days and on the seventh he concentrated on Rio."

The Harbour of Rio de Janeiro is known for its statue of Christ the Redeemer, but it also has some interesting natural formations that make it the seventh natural wonder. It seems to create illusions. The land makes the bay look like a river and there are several hidden harbours that look more like lakes than outlets to the sea.

The best way to see the entire metropolis, which is impressive for its size alone, is to clamber as high as possible. See all the sites by going up Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar), where you'll get a spectacular 360-degree view of Rio and Guanabara Bay. Rio natives (Cariocas) disagree on which view is more spectacular, Sugar Loaf or Christo (Christ the Redeemer) on Corcovado. It is well worth experiencing both, and making the decision yourself. Standing on top of either mountain you'll notice the natural harbour surrounded by lush, high mountains which meet the sea at world famous beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema.

Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain gives an even higher perspective, and is the most well known and recognized landmark of Rio. You can either drive or take a tram up to the statue - the best view is on the right-hand side. From up here you can see that Rio is divided by a mountain range into two areas: the Zona Norte (North Zone) and the Zona Sul (South zone). The Zona Sul holds most of the city's sights, including the Sugar Loaf and the famous beaches. Across the bay is Niteroi.
