British Columbia is well known for its grizzlies and snow but surprisingly, it's also home to Canada's only true desert - in the Okanagan Valley. The desert here is dotted with pristine lakes and a fertile valley making it the perfect place for fruit farms and vineyards and whole lot of fun!
Lake Osoyoos (pronounced O-soy-us) is one of a chain of five lakes found in the Okanagan Valley. Ten kilometres long, the lake offers nearly 30 miles of shoreline for people to enjoy.
Touted as the warmest lake in Canada, the water's temperature reaches a bathtub-like warmth of 26-33 C in August. The lake's five kinds of fish make it a hit with fishermen too.
Here they catch large mouth bass, trout and Kokanee. Lake Osoyoos stretches into Washington State in the U.S.A. A permit is required to visit the American side-and the lake is patrolled. There are several boat launches and marinas in Osoyoos that rent boats, skidoos, paddleboats and more.
The Nk'Mip (pronounced In-ka-meep) Cellars and vineyard is North America's first indigenous owned and operated winery dedicated to making premium wines. The winery site is one of the most attractive in the South Okanagan and is next to a tract of natural desert land while the newly planted vineyards and orchards provide a stunning contrast.
Developed by the Osoyoos Indian Band who control access to most of the remaining desert, the Nk'Mip Desert and Heritage Centre features cultural demonstrations, guided tours and rattlesnake banding.
