World's Longest Street, Toronto, CANADA
Airing Date: Jan 20th, 2003
The first 25 or so kilometres of Yonge Street are smack bang in the middle of the city and the presence of coffee shops, big brand stores and sport gives you a snapshot of Canadian life in the 21 st century.
Lesson number one in Toronto is that ice hockey is king and two blocks from the start of Yonge Street is the Hockey Hall of Fame. The hall is an entertaining family destination and houses numerous hockey-inspired activities and a commentary box to test your skill.
When cruising the streets of Toronto Canadian music is a must and Sam the Record Man has been a local favourite since the 1960s and is just the place to find it.
With Toronto in the rear vision mirror Tom heads towards Orillia where the super highway changes its name from Yonge Street to Highway 11. With the name change comes a couple of road rules that must be obeyed. For example it is compulsory to drive with your headlights on even during the day.
While cruising the motorways Canadians fascination with RV's (recreational vehicles) is apparent and while they cost around $68,000 to buy you can rent one for about $173 per day.
Now a road trip isn't a road trip without a good hamburger and half an hour up the road is Webers, an outfit where homemade hamburgers are the specialty.
Drive another hour, take a small detour and find yourself in Hunstville. Craft shops, antique stores and pubs line the streets. Drop into a pub like On the Docks Pub and you will find that Canadians are mad about beer. The local brew here is Muskoka Cream Ale, a full-bodied beer, is something not to be missed.
A good place to bunk down for the night is Falcon Lodge. Offering self-contained cabins and located on the shores of Lake Vernon it is a great place for swimming, canoeing and spying on the dream holiday homes across the water.
