Vancouver, CANADA
Airing Date: Apr 17th, 2006
Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada (Pop. 2.23 million) and is located on the Pacific coast on a peninsula which is surrounded by water and mountains which gives the place it's beautiful scenery.
The climate is also very good; mild all year round with warm summer days and colder rainy winters. It's considered a pretty clean and safe city with a big choice of shops and outdoor activities (Vancouverites ski, snow board, snowshoe, sail, boat, swim, paddle, run, cycle, climb, hike and walk during at least part of the year). Walking around Stanley Park is a favourite thing to do for locals and for tourists. It extends from the city centre of Vancouver almost to the North Shore.
With wonderful views of the mountains and the ocean around each corner, downtown Vancouver is one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Robson Street is its most popular shopping street. Chinatown has unique buildings, one of which is reputed to be the worlds' narrowest commercial building. The historic and tourist friendly area of Gastown is a draw card with its old steam clock.
North America's premier skiing destination is a mere two hours north at the resort of Whistler-Blackcomb which will be host to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. There are also 3 mountain ski areas within half an hour of the city: Cypress Bowl at the top of Hollyburn Mountain, Grouse Mountain Ski Resort at the top of Grouse Mountain and Mount Seymour Provincial Park.
