Cape Hillsborough, QUEENSLAND
Airing Date: Jun 23rd, 2003
At Cape Hillsborough Nature Resort you can shack up right on the beach and get back to nature - just like the good old days.
The resort is a half hour drive from Mackay in the sleepy town of Cape Hillsborough. It's a minute's stroll from the beach and the perfect spot for that good old-fashioned beachside holiday. The accommodation isn't fancy, but it's clean, comfy and cheap, making it an ideal retreat for families.
The resort backs onto the Cape Hillsborough National Park and is surrounded by beautiful bays.
There are plenty of walks to go on, including the Beachcomber Cove track. It leads to the Cascade Waterfall and a swimming hole where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. If you're a morning bird, wake up at sunrise and head to Casuarina Bay to watch the kangaroos and wallabies feed off the washed up seaweed.
For a bit of exercise, check out Wedge Island. It's accessed via Andrews Point Track, but check tide times before heading out. From the bottom of the hill, you have to climb 150 steps to reach the Wedge Island lookout. You'll see stunning views all the way to the southern tip of the Whitsundays.
A recent addition to the Cape Hillsborough National Park is the Environmental Walk. This 1.2 kilometre track is a self-guided walk along a boardwalk and through mangroves. It incorporates four elements of diversity - wildlife, genetics, community and culture.
Cape Hillsborough has two seasons, the temperate dry season from April to December, and the tropical summer season from January to March.
