The Highlands, ECUADOR
Airing Date: Mar 27th, 2006
Ecuador is well-named - after all, it sits right smack on the equator!
But since the Andes are at such an incredibly high altitude, it enjoys a perpetual springtime climate... perfect hiking weather. Perched across the Andes, Ecuador is a naturalist's delight with a diversity of vegetation zones, from the jungle 'cloud forest' to the high 'paramo' where the vast alpine plateau is dotted with majestic snow-capped volcanoes rising to over 6000m.
One of the best fun little places to experiment with your spot right on the equator is the Museo Solar Inti Nan, right near the La Mitad del Mundo monument. It's a tiny red brick construction with fascinating exhibits of astronomical geography and interesting explanations of the importance of Ecuador's geographical location.
One of the highlights is a solar chronometer made in 1865, which is unique in that it uses the rays of the sun to show the precise time, including the date and season. There are also fun demonstrations of tasks that can only be performed on the equator.
Ecuador's renowned Otavalo Market, dates back to pre-Inca times when products were transported from the eastern lowlands and traded for highland goods. The market has two different functions: the local market for buying and selling animals, food and other essentials, and the crafts market for the tourists.
