The Khan El Khalili market or just Khan to the locals has been open for around 600 years and there's not much they don't sell. But here's the tip: never pay the first price you hear and if the crowds get a bit much, head to the back alleyways. And remember to carry lots of small notes because it helps with haggling.

Kashgar is the last stop on China's famous Silk Road and while it may be a bit of a trek to get to, it's not just another shopping trip. It's a sensory overload and every Sunday about 50,000 people come from all around to shop and trade.

A trip to the Kashgar markets isn't complete without a visit to the animal markets to see how a real stock market operates. And even if you're not shopping for sheep, it's fun to see other people add to their farmyards.

Chatachak Markets, Bangkok, Thailand

The Chatuchak market in Bangkok is the biggest weekend market in the world - around 15 football fields and 15 THOUSAND stalls! This is less a market and more a small city of 70 hectares, boasting its own banking and police centres, Skytrain station and 200,000 visitors per day! You can grab a map but half the fun is getting lost. Clothes and accessories are the big sellers here but it's also the capital of kitsch.
