Burgundy Barge, FRANCE
Airing Date: Mar 21st, 2005
The region of Burgundy, with its romantic castles rising from vineyards, towering spires and dreamy old towns, is drenched in history. You'll be blown away by the medieval churches and rolling landscapes of the region, and its easy to see why it's so popular with tourists.
Perhaps the best way of exploring the Burgundy is by Litote Barge. The Barge follows the meandering Burgundy Canal. It has 10 comfortable cabins with bicycles on board so you can hop on and off and explore some towns by bike. The barge journey starts three hours from Paris in the tiny village of Ancy Le France.
The canal is almost 250 kilometres long and the speed limit of the barge is only 6kms per hour so you'll only cover about 80kms in a week. If you're not keen for that level of relaxation then there's a bus available for little excursions, or you can cycle your way to the next stop and meet up with the barge there.
Every day there's a new delight in store, and it's everything you could ask for in a French holiday -food, wine, scenery, culture and history.
One trip takes you on a guided tour of a magnificent 16th chateau in the village of Tanlay. The chteau is a fine example of French Renaissance style. It is framed by wrought-iron railings and has a dining room filled with period furniture. It also has a graceful staircase, ornate fireplaces and a small room in the tower above. It is a fantastic example of history and will leave you dumbstruck by its sheer grandeur.
