Paris Ritz, FRANCE
Airing Date: Jan 1st, 2002

Beautiful, breathtaking and stunning are words used to describe many world-class cities, but 'ritzy' was made famous by none other than The Ritz. It was once voted the best hotel in the world and inspired the word 'ritzy', meaning 'luxurious and elegant'. When you see it, you'll know it still lives up to its name. The rooms are decorated in French classical tradition, with ornate light switches and peach satin-lined bed lamps. Not only is its appearance remarkable, but so is the guest list. While you wine and dine or walk around the grounds or splash around in the pool with classical music playing underwater, you may just bump into someone famous. Elizabeth Taylor and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor are among the Hotel's many one-time celebrity patrons! If you want to take a little something with you as a memento, then stroll down Temptation Walk, a long gallery of boutiques just off the foyer. You don't need to be a guest at The Ritz to be a bit 'ritzy'. The hotel offers cooking schools that teach you the secrets of some of the best chefs in France. The school is named after Auguste Escoffier, the original chef at the Ritz. The cooking workshops run for three days but if you have less time on your hands, they also hold daily demonstrations. With either one you choose, the recipes are included and so is a taste test.
