Food is a large part of the Cretan way of life and it's their healthy diet high in bread, fruit and veggies along with the clean air and sunshine that gives the locals a healthy glow. In fact the Cretan diet is said to be one of the best in the world. Crete isn't expensive either, leaving no excuses for not taking up the local diet.
Planning to make a delicious local snack, Aristos hires a scooter and sets out to gather the appropriate ingredients.
Just two and a half hours drive from the capital Iraklion, Sitia is a very small town, and it doesn't take long to travel down a couple of cobble-stoned streets to the area behind the esplanade, where many of the food stores are to be found.
Aside from the healthy stuff there are plenty of treats as well and Aristos couldn't go past the pastry shop for kalsunia - baked sweet ricotta cakes.
After shopping his way around the seaside town Aristos is ready to fire up a seaside kitchen. The food bought along the way is the ingredients for dako, the Cretan version of bruschetta.
For the perfect Cretan snack or starter, serve the dako with a glass of Sitian red wine.
