Delphi, GREECE
Airing Date: Dec 2nd, 2002
Located about 50 kilometres from the Mediterranean coast of Greece, Delphi gets a stream of visitors because of the Delphi ruins, just two minutes' drive out of town.
The town used to get large crowds back in the 4th century BC as well, but then people weren't coming to look, but rather, to hear the Greek God Apollo foretell the future.
On the other side of Delphi is Chrissos, which is another town well worth a look. The best way to get there is to take a taxi and during your trip you will pass through a valley of over 35,000 olive trees.
Another 30 minutes' drive from Chrissos is Arahova, which is built on the side of a mountain. Local legend says that any man over 65 who can climb its 150 steps will be kissed by the prettiest girls in the village.
If you are the sort of person who likes to taste a bit of everything then you'll like Greek restaurants because it is quite common here to fill up just on entrees. And if you want a souvenir to take home, this part of Greece is famous for its flokatis, or white woolly rugs. You can pick one up for around $35.
