Meteora Monasteries, GREECE

Located in Thessaly, in northern Greece, the Meteora Monasteries are a man made wonder built upon a natural geological wonder. The word meteora means suspended in the air which is very appropriate given that the monasteries sit precariously on top of a massive rock outcrop.

The World Heritage listed Meteora monasteries are approximately six hours drive from Athens and can be visited in a day but to fully appreciate the area most visitors stay overnight in the nearby Kalambaka or Kastraki village.

The first monastery, founded by Saint Athinasio, was built by monks in the 14th century. Eventually nearly every pinnacle had a monastry on it, with 24 in total. The monasteries once served as a refuge for Christianity during the Ottoman occupation of Greece and access was only possible via rope ladders or by being hoisted up in a rope basket.

These days, visitors can climb up steps cut into the side of the rock formations. For the more adventurous, rock climbing is also available in the area. Of the 24 original monasteries, six are still functioning and open to the public. The most famous and highest is the Great Meteoron Monastery. Although, the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen is a 'must see' when visiting Meteora. The small church of St. Stephen was built in the middle of 16th century and decorated in 1545 or a little later. During World War II the monasteries were bombed and only a few monks were left living there. In 1960, St. Stephen's became a convent and for the first time in over 1000 years, women could pray and meditate in the monasteries. Also, St. Stephen is the most attainable (getting there doesn't involve innumerable stairs to reach it). Roussano is the other convent at Meteora.
