Mykonos, GREECE
Airing Date: Jan 31st, 2005
There are over 100 inhabited islands in Greece, ranging from the remote and secluded to the hectic party islands.
Mykonos, one of the most famous party islands, is a four hour ferry ride from Athens. The ferry service departing from Piraeus, the harbour near Athens, is easy to use and there are several ferries a day which can take you over to Mykonos or any of the other islands.
Mykonos is the most cosmopolitan of the Greek Islands, with a great party atmosphere that attracts 800,000 visitors a year. It's popular with families, backpackers, couples both gay and straight, and even nudists!
There are plenty of tavernas on Mykonos where you can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine, and there's no shortage of bars either. As the sun goes down, the place comes alive with new party goers and those who haven't been to bed yet.
If you're looking to relax after partying hard, Mykonos also has beautiful beaches like the Paradise and Super Paradise Beaches ... and not surprisingly, they're great spots to party too.
When you've finished partying, you can rent a motorbike for around $20 a day and take a look around. Discover some of the more isolated beaches on the North Coast, like Agios Stosis or the Paraga and Panormos beach, where you can see live shows in Antoni's Taverna. If you don't fancy hiring a motorbike, every beach is accessible by bus or taxi.
As Mykonos is one of the most popular islands in the Cyclades, it's harder to find bargain accommodation as you might be able to do on the smaller islands. It is a good idea to book ahead if you're planning to come during July or August. A great place to stay is the Hotel Akrogiali.
For a bit of culture and quiet, head over to Delos, the island next to Mykonos. It's just a day trip away, and is a protected, sacred island of the ancient Greek civilisation.
Delos is home to some of the most atmospheric and well preserved ruins of the Greek Empire. You can't stay on the island, but ferries run during the morning from Mykonos port and will pick you up in the afternoon.
