Santorini with Cathy Freeman, GREECE
Airing Date: Aug 18th, 2003
Now that she's run her last lap on the international track circuit, it's time for Cathy Freeman to trade her runners for thongs, her body suit for cossies and her cap for a sun hat.
Santorini, located in the middle of the Aegean Sea, is a semicircular island created from the violent eruption of a prehistoric volcano. This is the southernmost island of the Cyclades and comprises of 39 islands, 24 of which are inhabited.
Officially known as Thira, it is regarded by many as the most spectacular of all Greek islands. Thousands visit each year to gaze in wonder at the submerged caldera (cauldron), a vestige of what was probably the biggest volcanic eruption in recorded history.
Ernie and Cathy hung out in Santorini taking in the sites of the island. First up they enjoyed a cruisey nine hour boat ride to the island from Athens, then rode a lazy donkey up the hill to the main town of Fira.
Cathy has strong ties to Greece - it was here she won her first world title. It kicked off a winning streak of 22 races in a row - at the pinnacle, the race which stopped the nation at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
Cathy and Ernie headed to Santorini's beach to enjoy the beautiful blue water which surrounds the island. This is no ordinary beach. Forget the sand - here the shores are covered in volcanic rock, so don't forget your shoes.
To finish the holiday Cathy took in one last view. It's said that Santorini is one of the best places in the world to watch the sunset - and the tiny village of Oia is the place to see it. Just remember to get there early, because it's a very popular show.
