Mumbai, INDIA

The population of India has reached over one billion and the country has up to 17 major languages. The capital, Mumbai, (previously known as Bombay) has the population the same size as Australia's, spread across seven islands connected by bridges to the mainland. To this day, it remains India's 'city of dreams', where Indians come to follow their aspirations.

You can experience spiritual enlightenment and meet with the Mumbai Laughing Club under the gateway of India every morning. This stone archway is a landmark in the city, hastily erected as a symbol of welcome to Queen Mary and King George V of England when they visited in 1911.

India is a film-crazed country, and the heart of the industry is Bollywood, located in Mumbai. The Bollywood industry churns out 800 feature films a year, and every village has a cinema within walking distance so no one misses out.

The films are in Hindi, but don't worry if you're not familiar with the language, as the all the storylines are the same. Typically, the films follow the same love story format which can often be cheesy, with the actors breaking into dance at the most unexpected times. It's even possible for you to get a taste of Bollywood first hand. Officially the Mumbai's City Film studios are off limits, but unofficially, you can blag your way in and check out these amazing productions.

If you fancy staring in one of these movies, apparently Colaba in Mumbai is the place to be 'spotted'. Even as a Westerner you may be approached. The pay is only around $30 a day, but meals are provided and the experience is sure to be one of a kind!

Coloba is situated at the southern peninsula and is where most of the tourists go for the best hotels and restaurants. It's here you'll find the Gateway of India and the well renowned Taj Mahal Hotel.

Mumbai itself is a city that never sleeps. It's alive with people constantly milling about and incredibly chaotic traffic. If you'd like to discover a different side to India, you can hop on a train and head down to the popular tourist spot of Goa.

The train from Mumbai to Goa is part of the rail system called the Konkan Railway. When you purchase your ticket it's best to remain patient, as purchasing a ticket might not actually guarantee you make it onto the train.
