Donegal, IRELAND
Airing Date: Aug 22nd, 2005
Glencolumbcille in Donegal is where you'll find Oideas Gael, they run Irish courses during the summer time.
Glencolumbcille is a Gaeltacht area, which means that nearly everybody speaks Gaelic as their first language. And on one of these tours you can learn the language and traditional Irish songs.
Glenveagh castle is open to visitors from mid-spring to early autumn, timed to coincide with the deerstalking and house parties of bygone days.
The gardens are also open to the public. Cornelia Adair imported many exotic plants and Henry Mcllhenny cultivated them, perfecting the design and flowering cycles. Attractions include the walled garden, which is at its most colourful in August, and the Belgian Walk, built by wounded Belgian soldiers during the First World War.
At the end of the day for a pint or two visit Leo's Tavern. The tavern is owned by the Brennan family, which includes Irish music stars Enya and Clannad. The walls are covered in Enya memorabilia, and U2, Paul Brady and Christie Moore have all performed there.
