Shannon River, IrelandShannon River, IrelandShannon River, Ireland

The 386km long River Shannon, Ireland's longest river, divides the West of Ireland from the East and South, and runs through 13 of Ireland's 32 Counties. The river has always been an important waterway and has been the location of many Viking clashes, a major strategic importance in military campaigns and the site of important monastic settlements, such as Clonmacnoise.

Today the river offers visitors the chance to avoid the traffic congestion of Ireland's roads and cruise its scenic waters instead. Cruising the River Shannon is a relaxing holiday option where all your accommodation, transport, restaurant and recreation needs are organised in the cruising package.

The cruising season starts in the middle of March and finishes at the end of October. Most cruiser companies along the Shannon provide full tuition when you first take the boat and, at present, no license is necessary to drive a boat on the river. The river is navigable by hire cruisers for most of its length.

From North to South, there are many places for tourists to stay and visit, offering great hospitality. You can choose to stop in riverside towns such as Athlone, home to 'Seans Bar', Ireland's oldest pub , visit the Clonmacnoise monastic site, take a train ride on the Bog Railway, or simply enjoy the river's three hundred and eighty six kilometres of great Irish history FURTHER INFORMATION-
