Bologna is a medieval city known for its age-old halls of learning. So old in fact that Europe's first university is located here, built in the 16th century.Aside from its history, Bologna is also know for its cuisine, and is often referred to as the food capital of Italy. The medieval markets, packed with fresh fruit and vegetables, and the region's deliciously rich food have given Bologna the title 'La Grassa', meaning 'the fat one'.

Bologna is the home of Parma cheese and sausage meats such as mortadella. A trip to the local pasta shop, La Strogline, allows customers to watch tortellini and other pasta products being made.So far this city has avoided major tourist traffic and gives visitors the opportunity to get a feel for the type of Italy the locals know. It offers a huge range of choices for dining out, with many local restaurants providing jazz music while you eat. One more reason to visit Bologna is the Ferrari museum, Galleria Ferrari, located about 40 kilometres from town. The museum boasts one of the largest collections of Ferraris on show in the world.
