Gladiator School -Italy
Airing Date: Sep 15th, 2007
When in Rome, why not do as the Gladiators did and enrol in Gladiator school? A couple of thousand years later and a couple of kilometres down the road from the Colosseum, the gladiator tradition has been revived. The school is run by members of the Historic Group of Rome and they teach tourists the history and basics of gladiator training/combat. Kitted out in official gladiator "uniform", participants can unleash their inner Russell Crowe. There's no blood and guts, but plenty of glory.
Your Gladiator instructor will teach you how to train and fight with authentic weapons, just like those used by the gladiators of ancient Rome. Lessons are organized and led by members of the Historic Group of Rome who specialize in the re-enactment of Roman life and Gladiatorial combat.
Each lesson is conducted for approximately 2 hours. After an introduction to Roman History and life as a Gladiator, you begin your transformation. You receive a Roman Gladiator kit consisting of a tunic, belt, iron, leather protective glove and rudis (training sword). Let your imagination run wild and play like Spartacus for a day, fighting off ferocious lions and sword wielding warriors!
Next, learn the basic techniques of gladiatorial sword fighting. Once mastered, a gladiatorial tournament (optional) takes place, with the winner receiving a victory prize. All participants receive a certificate of accomplishment.
