Japan Alps, JAPAN

The Japan Alps runs through the centre of Honshu Island about four hours from Tokyo. The area is often referred to as the 'roof of Japan' and is very popular with outdoor enthusiasts due to it's breathtaking scenery of snow capped mountains, pristine streams meandering through forests and air so crisp you would never believe you're in one of the most populated (per capita) countries in the world.

Before you head into the mountains make time to stop in the village of Takayama, in the foothills of the Alps. The village feels like it hasn't changed much in hundreds of years with traditional wooden buildings with old world charm and lively markets taking place along the traditional streets every morning. You can even taste the produce such as miso and sake out the front of the shops. For sake, just keep your eyes out for big cedar balls which indicate that fresh sake is ready to try.

Kamikochi is a highlight of any trip to the Alps and is a good place to base yourself for hiking, with dozens of hikes available. They range from one hour to several days. But if hiking is not for you, then you can still experience the magnificent Alps from a cable car. It takes 15 minutes and costs around $18 to get you to the top.

After an exhausting hike, there's no better way to relax than in one of the famous onsen or hot springs at Shirahone. It is said that bathing there for three days ensures three years without a cold, and the milky-blue hydrogen sulphide waters have a wonderful silky feel. Just be warned, it's not customary to wear swim wear in the hot springs. Intimate and dramatic, the Shirahone hot-spring resort straddles a deep gorge and features some traditional inns and open-air baths. Definitely a top priority on a trip to Kamikochi or Norikura. The traditional form of accommodation in Japan is the Ryokan. Staying at a Ryokan will provide you a traditional Japanese cultural experience, it's not like staying at a western-style hotel, because in a Ryokan you are expected to come to dinner wearing your yukata or dressing gown! Ryokans were built to welcome weary travellers who needed to rest before continuing on their long journey. Some Ryokans were very simple and offered extra rooms in their homes for travellers. Others were more elaborate and the owners worked hard to make their guests feel as welcome as possible.
