Dhoni Cruise, MALDIVES
Airing Date: May 19th, 2003
The Dhoni is an all-purpose boat that has been part of Maldivian culture for centuries.
Built from the timber of palm trees, this unique type of boat is used for fishing, inter-island transport, movement of cargo and cruises around the atolls of the Maldives.
They have a combination living, dining and games room and four cabins that can accommodate up to eight people. There's also a shower and all meals are included in the hire of the Dhoni. It works just like a mobile retreat with a crew of four to ensure passengers have a wonderful experience. On this cruise the biggest decision you'll have to make is whether to swim, snorkel or fish.
As the traditional wooden boat sails through sparkling, sun-kissed water you can admire the beauty of the Maldives from the deck. And with tropical, deserted islands rising out from the sea, this area could be the closest thing to paradise.
The four-day Dhoni Cruise takes you to many tropical islands, one of which is Kudabados. This island was saved from resort development and became the Kuda Bandos Reserve. It has a few facilities for day-trippers but otherwise is undeveloped and very picturesque.
Another island, which makes a popular lunch stop, is Kuda Villigilli and it's just one in about 900 deserted islands in the Maldives.
The fishing village of Himmafushi Island is a great stop to watch the Maldivian culture come to life. Each day at sunset all the locals gather in the square for a bit of socialising, and occasionally they perform the 'thara', a traditional tambourine dance that will have you tapping your feet in no time.
Snorkelling is a popular day activity and in the Maldives there are more than 1300 different fish and corals.
Fishing is also a great past time; if you catch a fish the crew will cook it for you. It's all play and no work aboard this fantastic cruise. And if you're after maximum sunshine, head to the Maldives during dry season between December and April.
