A visit to Mexico City would not be complete without a look at the Zcalo, the heart of the city since the Aztecs' rule. Centuries ago this was one of the largest trading centres in North America, in what was then the city of Tenochtitlan. Today the Zcalo is the second largest square in the world, covering over 13 acres. Its official title is the Plaza de la Constitucin.
A couple of blocks south of the Zcalo in the Sonora District is the exotic Sonora Market, with four diverse specialities toys, caged birds, herbs and folk medicine. Just 50 k's northeast of Mexico City lies the site of the Great Temple of Teotihuacn, ancient capital of the Aztecs and Mexico's biggest ancient city. The city was developed around AD 250 and 600. The ruins of the ancient hub of the Aztec empire were unearthed accidentally in 1978 by telephone repairmen who discovered the Coyolzauhqui stone disc, weighing eight tonnes and marking the foot of the stairs of the temple.
