Oaxaca, Mexico, USA

The ancient city of Monte Alban existed long before its neighbouring town of Oaxaco came into existence - it was founded around 700BC. The city was at its peak from about 300BC to 700AD and was considered quite a prominent capital for the local Zapotec's of the time.

Eventually the place was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. But it's these ruins that the tell tales of long go. Travellers can wander past many buildings, over ancient tombs and up a pyramid of stairs to soak in the fascinating history of the Zapotecs. From these giant heights it's possible to see the three valleys of Oaxaca and the spectacular landscape that surrounds it. Without a doubt this is the religious, political and ceremonial heart of an ancient empire and you can explore all this for about $10.

Right near this eerie site is the thriving and cultural city of Oaxaca. While it's a major travel destination it still remains extremely beautiful and can easily be explored by foot. Narrow streets are sprinkled with lovely colonial stone buildings, markets are bustling with local handicrafts and the central square is alive with festivities, cafes and restaurants. Oaxaca is your one-stop-shop archetypal Mexican destination.

This city is known for many things, but one that really stands out is its outstanding collection of food. Like the city itself the cuisine here is both traditional and sumptuous and is a real highlight of a visit to Oaxaca. In fact, Oaxaca is so well known for its culinary creativity, they hold a Food of the Gods Festival every year. But with all that creativity there comes a little eccentricity in the food department so there is a fair chance that you will encounter some of Mexico's culinary surprises.

One of the best and definitely one of the cheapest places to sample some of this cuisine is at one of the many roadside stalls and market stands.

Some of the regional specialties include: Quesillo - the salty stringy cheese; Tamales de Mole - banana leaves stuffed with beans, chicken or beef; and Chapulines - small fried grasshoppers with onion, garlic, lemon and salt. Yep, grasshoppers!

Take a Mezcal tasting tour and learn about tequila's rougher cousin - Mezcal. This cactus-based spirit is only produced in the Oaxaca Valley, and it differs from tequila in several ways. Not only it is spiced up with delightful things like raw chicken breast, every bottle has a worm floating around in it.
