Akaroa Seals, NEW ZEALAND
Airing Date: Apr 10th, 2006
Akaroa is a seaside port with a very French feel, but the main the difference between this seaside village and any other in the world is what you can do here.
Where else could you go on a Seal Safari, take a tour on sea kayak and swim with the smallest and rarest dolphins in the world, the Hector dolphin. To this day, Akaroa remains unique as the site of the only attempted settlement by the French in New Zealand.
The charm of this old French town, together with the incredible scenery encountered on the way, have assured Akaroa's popularity as a unique tourist destination. The Seal safari will drive you from Akaroa to an altitude of 630m, out on the crater, and down the outer slopes to the eastern coastline and pacific ocean.
The seal colony is located at the foot of 100m cliffs. The parking site for the tour is within 30 metres of the Seal colony allowing for a quick up close and personal! Akoroa is just 85kms from Christchurch. It's a leisurely drive, or if you would prefer, a bus runs from Christchurch 3 times a week.
