Belfast, Northern Ireland
Airing Date: May 17th, 2008
Now is the time to visit the rejuvenated, buzzing, boomtown of Belfast!Belfast, the Capital & largest city in Northern Ireland, is currently something of a boomtown. A city in recovery, fast rebuilding and reinventing itself. The economy is thriving and the people are in good spirits, hence why Northern Ireland was tipped by Lonely Planet as one of the must-see countries to visit in 2007 and why Belfast itself was named as one of the 'Top 10 Cities on the Rise'.
Whilst most of us can't help but think of the 'troubles' that plagued Northern Ireland, and in particular Belfast, for many years, the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 led to major redevelopment in the city, including Victoria Square, the Titanic Quarter and Laganside, the Odyssey complex and landmark Waterfront Hall.
The city now has 4 quarters that are rapidly being developed with both residents and visitors in mind, offering a buzzing atmosphere and plenty to see and do.
- The Queens Quarter, in South Belfast, was named after Queens University and has a large student population. Bursting with artistic creativity and overflowing with shopping and dining opportunities, it also offers a vibrant nightlife and is a relatively recent addition to the Belfast's urban jigsaw.
- The Titanic Quarter is a major site of redevelopment, on Belfast city harbour, where visitors will be enthralled by the Titanic story in the city of it's birth.
The Titanic was built in Belfast's Harland and Wolff Shipyards and completed on April 2, 1912. This area is now set to become one of the largest waterfront developments in Europe, with a blue-chip technology district, including apartments, a riverside entertainment district, and a major Titanic-themed attraction.
Today you can explore the area on a Lagan Boat Cruise and step aboard the last remaining vessel built for the White Star Line, still afloat, and moored nearby.
- The Cathedral Quarter takes its name from St. Anne's Cathedral, the
ecclesiastical heart of the city. This quarter is packed full of fascinating architecture, ranging from distinguished banks and public buildings, to cosy pubs and trendy warehouse restaurants. In recent years, Cathedral Quarter has taken on a pivotal role as the focus for Belfast's burgeoning arts and crafts scene. The Quarter is home to many visual and performing artists, as well as community groups.
- The Gaeltacht Quarter is an area offering a rich historical legacy, along the
vibrant Falls Road. Here, the Irish language continues to flourish, igniting a range of 21st century cultural experiences.
No wonder this city welcomed almost 7 million tourists last year!
