Airing Date: Apr 12th, 2004
Tromso is located 400 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, and during their summer months the sun remains visible for 24 hours a day.
A cable car operates daily during the summer and takes you 420 metres to the top of Mount Storsteinen - the best place to see the famous midnight sun. You'll also get gorgeous views of the town and the surrounding mountains.
Tromso is the largest town in northern Norway and has been the starting point for many arctic expeditions.
The Polaria museum is dedicated to these and all things arctic. The building is shaped like an iceberg and inside you can experience a snowstorm, and the world's most northern aquarium filled with marine life from the arctic seas.
Hiking is a national pastime in Norway and something that is encouraged with the Friluftsleven (Outdoor Recreation Act). This means that anyone is legally entitled to hike or ski across wilderness areas, including outlying fields and pastures.
Tromso has the most bars per capita in Norway and the nightlife is bustling. Try an 'Arctic Beer' made by the Mack brewery, which bills itself as the northernmost brewery in the world.
