Royal Edinburgh, SCOTLAND
Airing Date: Apr 17th, 2006
Edinburgh is one of the most distinctive and widely recognised cities in the world.
The Scottish capital is built around, and defined by, the east-west axis of the Royal Mile. This is the main street variously called Castle Hill, Lawnmarket, High Street and Canongate that extends from Edinburgh Castle in the west to the Scottish Parliament Building and the Palace of Holyrood House in the east. After the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle is the next most visited historic monument in Britain. From the battlements of the castle you get a panoramic view over the city of Edinburgh, laid out before you. Inside the walls is a remarkable fortress and former Royal residence, packed with history. Remember also that though the castle is a historic monument, it is also a working military establishment.
The Royal Yacht Britannia is one of the world's most famous ships. Launched at John Brown's Shipyard in Clydebank in 1953, the Royal Yacht proudly served Queen and country for forty four years. During that time Britannia carried The Queen and the Royal Family on 968 official voyages, from the remotest regions of the South Seas to the deepest divides of Antarctica.
On 11 December 1997 Britannia was decommissioned at Portsmouth Naval Base in the presence of The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and fourteen senior members of The Royal Family. Britannia is now permanently moored in Edinburgh's historic port of Leith and visitors can step on board the ship that was once home to the world's most famous family.
