Timbavati Private Game Reserve, SOUTH AFRICA
Airing Date: Jan 1st, 2002
The sight of a lion, leopard, elephant, rhino or buffalo is always a thrill, especially close up on a wilderness trail. Other classic African animals to watch out for include giraffes, hippos, zebras, antelope as well as the superb bird life.
The best place to view these Big Five is the Kruger National Park, or one of the bordering private reserves. Kruger National Park is home to some 147 mammals, 507 birds, 114 reptiles and 34 amphibian species - more than any other game sanctuary on the continent.
Timbavati is a private game reserve which borders Kruger National Park. It offers safari expeditions where visitors are allowed to travel on foot (for the truly brave), in open vehicles, and even head off on night drives. Timbavati is known for its large herds of buffalo and elephant, and the night drives are good for viewing leopards, antbears, porcupines and hyenas.
The best time for game viewing is during the dry winter season (April to October).
