Andong, KOREA
Airing Date: Jan 1st, 2002
Located about four hours' drive south east of Seoul, Andong is a city still living in the past. One of the reasons for this is its link to the 400 year-old Confucian academy, Toson Sowon.
This academy, located a half-hour drive from town, was until the mid-20th century a house of learning for men who wanted to live by the Confucian ethics of devotion and loyalty.Although it is no longer a Confucian academy, it is still an inspiring place where you can spend a couple of hours learning Confucian ideals. To experience an entirely ancient culture, drive 20 minutes west of Andong to Hahoe Village and into a community that respects tradition. Little has changed in this village since the mid-16th century.
As a word of advice, don't go beyond the house gates unless you are invited.
