Seoul Shopping, SOUTH KOREA
Airing Date: Sep 26th, 2005
Seoul is both the capital and the heart of the Republic of Korea, home to 15 million of the nation's 47.6 million people. Once reserved for nobility, today Seoul is now the fifth largest city in the world.
South Korea is a shopper's paradise! Great prices can be found for shoes, clothes, handbags, suitcases, leather goods, silk, antiques and reproductions, and all kinds of souvenirs. You can easily find makers of custom-made clothes and shoes of varying quality. Although department stores and most shops have fixed prices for items, bargaining can usually get a lower price with street vendors and in the major open air markets such as Namdaemun and Dongdaemun.
.
And how do you navigate your way around this busy city to find the best bargains? Goodwill Guides are volunteer guides, who help visitors to South Korea communicate in various situations through language translation and also translation of cultural situations! There is no charge for the Goodwill Guides, but you are expected to pay for admission tickets, food, transportation, etc., for your guide. Guides offer advice about travelling in South Korea such as tour route planning, information on transportation, accommodation, interpretation service, and of course guide services to tourist attractions.
While in South Korea, check out the women's hanbok which comprises of a wrap-around skirt and a jacket. It is often called chima-jeogori, 'chima' being the Korean word for skirt and 'jeogori' the word for jacket. You can find traditional dresses such as the hanbok on Apgujeong Rodeo Street.
Luxury vehicles, high-end boutiques, salons and well-coiffed clientele line South Korea's answer to LA's Rodeo Drive. The street gets the other half of its name from Seoul's Apgujeong-dong area, the centre of Korea's youth culture. Fashion-savvy hipsters flock to Apgujeong-dong to maintain their cutting-edge styles. Anything you see on the runways of the world's fashion scene can be found here. You'll also adore the restaurants and cafs in this neighbourhood. Traditional Asian dishes are served in jazz cafs and less-than-modest restaurants.
