Spanish Ceramics, SPAIN
Airing Date: Sep 30th, 2002
Northern Spain has been famous for Faro pottery for hundreds of years and the Basilio Sobrecueva Ceramics School still teaches how to make it the old fashioned way.
Dont worry if ceramics arent your forte. Classes are geared to cater for both beginners and those who know a thing or two about clay.
The Basilio Sobrecueva Ceramics School offers eight day packages that include everything from classes to accommodation. Each morning guests can take part in a three hour pottery lesson and extend their artistic skills.
With the classes finishing by lunch time, afternoons are left free to eat and explore.
Thirty minutes from the property is the Picos de Europa National Park the perfect spot for a walk through the hills.
In the hills youll bump into locals such as Amalia. She lives alone from April to November and works the property on her own, with her husband only visiting every few days to bring fresh fruit and vegetables. She makes her own cheese in a very traditional way something to be savoured on the walk.
For a good local feed try the Maria Rosa Restaurant at the park entrance. It offers a hearty serve of fabada, a stew of white beans, pork and blood sausage, for $15.
To sample the local craft visit the El Bosque craft shop where a pair of traditional shepherd footwear costs just $25.
