Zermatt, SWITZERLAND
Airing Date: Apr 12th, 2004
The mountain village of Zermatt in southern Switzerland is one of the greatest ski and climbing centres in the world - and it's easy to see why.
Nestled deep in the heart of the famous Alps, it is surrounded by 38 mountains and is the closest village to the majestic Matterhorn - the most photographed mountain in the world.
Zermatt is steeped in history and charm. No cars are allowed within the town area of Zermatt so visitors get around by horse drawn carriages or electric taxis.
Despite its seemingly quiet nature, Zermatt is still renowned for its party nightlife. The is a selection of restaurants in the village square, the cafs are plentiful and there are bars for every taste, be it rock music, dancing or theme nights.
But Zermatt nightlife isn't the first and foremost reason why visitors flock to the town year in, year out. It's the adrenalin-charged activities that make Zermatt increasingly popular to tourists, as well as the fantastic views of the magnificent Alps.
Zermatt is home to three ski fields and boasts Europe's highest ski run, Klein Matterhorn. Klien Matterhorn is one of the more accessible and popular mountains. At an enormous 3810 metres, it's the Matterhorn's smallest neighbour.
On the top of Klein Matterhorn is the world's highest ice pavilion. Inside this free exhibition you'll find the mystical world of ice sculptures, tunnels and a glacier exhibition.
There are two ways to get back to the bottom of the mountain; snow boarding (for the dare devils) or paragliding, for those who want to enjoy the scenery as they descend. A 20 minute paraglider ride with Air Born Zermatt costs $200.
