Rangiroa, TAHITI

Technically Rangiroa isn't actually an island, but rather dozens of islands in an atoll - a ring of coral strung around a lagoon. This atoll is so big that you can't see one shore from the other. Being completely surrounded by water there are very few roads on the atoll, so most travel is by water.

Take a cruise to Le Lagoon Bleu - The Blue Lagoon. On the hour long trip across the inland sea the captain acts as cook as well, preparing a fantastic fish feast for lunch.

The atoll is considered one of the most exciting dive spots in the South Pacific. Under the instruction of a guide, you can dive near one of the channels that connect the lagoon with the outside ocean to experience it all. The channels are like magnets for sea creatures. A huge concentration of marine life including turtles, sharks and local species can be found in this aqua playground.

After all the underwater action, return to your above ground base at the Kia Ora Hotel, where guests have a pick of 63 bungalows with all the trimmings of a plush Tahitian island resort. Positioned both on the beach and on the water the bungalows are ideally located and outside every beachfront room there's just the thing for washing off the salt water - a spa overlooking the lagoon. If you'd rather enjoy the atoll's marine life without getting wet, visit the resort's glass bottom bar. From the comfort of the bar you can observe the fish dancing through the water below and sip on a Blue Lagoon instead of swimming in it!
