Teahupoo, TAHITI

Many see Tahiti as a honeymoon escape, a place where couples can go for the ultimate romantic escape, but there's more to this island than resorts and romance. Tahiti has a gnarly side that has surfers and budget backpackers travelling here from all over the world.

It all happens on Tahiti's little island of Tahiti Iti, located about 40 minutes drive from Papeete. Bypassed by the tourist industry, this magnificent region boasts clear waters, waterfalls, caves and some of the best surfing around. It's a destination where you can experience the authentic side of Tahitian culture, meet lots of friendly locals, be kind to the money belt and have an adventure of a lifetime.

Pension Bonjouir is a great place to stay while you're exploring the area. Spread over two acres of lawn filled with Tahitian flowers and trees, what the pension lacks in opulence it makes up for in character. Guests can choose from a range of accommodation options including bungalows, private rooms, shared rooms or even camping. All guests share a communal kitchen and facilities include free use of kayaks, volleyball and the entertainment system in the restaurant/bar area.

Pensioner Bonjouir can also organise a unique and adventurous outrigger canoe excursion to allow you to explore some of Tahiti Iti's most remote places by boat. You'll get to see the spectacular cliffs of Pari, hike into a dense rainforest to swim in the Vaipoiri Grotto, and snorkel in a turquoise coral garden. The adventure ends up on the beach for a gourmet lunch. There are plenty of great spots to explore in this region, but the beach is the big draw card. Surfers come from all over the world in search of the ultimate wave. Teahupoo (or 'Chopes' for short) is world renowned when it comes to surfing. Local surf guides with boats can advise you on the best break to suit your level of experience. Once you're out beyond the break, be prepared for the ride of your life!

If you want to surf but aren't up for the big waves, try one of the other locations around Tahiti Iti such as Papera Beach, which is a little mellower and located only half an hour up the coast from Teahupoo.

When you travel to Tahiti, remember it's best to come during the dry season, from May through to October.
