Chatuchak Markets, Bangkok, THAILAND
Airing Date: Jul 11th, 2005
Bangkok is a city of markets, but Chatuchak Weekend Market is the biggest of them all. The market covers an area of 35 acres, contains more than 15 000 shops and stalls, has over 200 000 visitors each day, who spend an estimated total of 30 million baht (approx US$750 000).
The published opening hours for the market are from 9.00am to 6.00pm on Saturday and Sunday, although many of the stalls actually open sometime between 9.00am and 10.00am and close around sunset.
Chatuchak has, in theory, been segregated into areas depending on the types of goods sold. There are maps available which detail the various sections and it is strongly advised you pick one up as they are invaluable when trying to navigate your way around.
At Chatuchak the prices are generally substantially cheaper than the shopping centres and street stalls on Silom and Sukhumvit. Many shops in the more central areas of the city also have a branch here, selling the same goods for much lower prices. Bargaining is expected, if not mandatory so further discounts can be found.
The range of products on sale is extensive, and includes household accessories, handicrafts, souvenirs, furniture, religious artefacts, art, antiques, live animals, books, music, clothes, food, plants and even the odd dried grasshopper!
Chatuchak is an excellent place to find traditional Thai handicrafts and the prices are usually low because of the quantity available and the intense competition among vendors. In addition to traditional handicrafts, there is also a wide range of attractive contemporary items. Candles, ceramics, contemporary paintings and other items for the home are also a good buy. Clothing and personal accessories are everywhere and probably take up the greatest part of the market.
