Miss Universe 2005 Pageant, THAILAND

When 20-year-old Jennifer Hawkins from Newcastle, Australia was announced as Miss Universe 2004 in front of a full-capacity audience in Quito, Ecuador last June, the self-described vivacious former legal secretary says she was caught completely off guard!

Continuing the crusade of her predecessors, Miss Universe 2004 Jennifer Hawkins has used her title to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS and the research needed to find a cure for the deadly disease. Her year-long reign has taken her around the globe as an ambassador for organizations like YouthAIDS, the Global Health Council, amfAR and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

The Miss Universe Organization works to advance and support today's women. Titleholders have gone on to high-profile careers in government, engineering, business, finance, genetic research, broadcasting, publishing, film and television.

Today's Miss Universe competition is both fast-paced and compelling, featuring some of the world's most ambitious and accomplished women. These are women of power and grace, intelligence and commitment, substance and style. The Miss Universe Organization is dedicated to enabling them to reach their potential. After a year of travel and new experiences, Jennifer Hawkins is in Thailand to hand over the crown to the new Miss Universe 2005. The crown is a masterpiece in itself. Valued at $200,000 and designed by Mikimoto the crown has 500 diamonds totalling nearly 30 carats and 120 pearls. The design depicts the ancient symbol of the phoenix rising, which signifies status, power and the vision of great beauty.

Miss Universe 2005 will be crowned on the morning of the 31st of May at the Impact Arena, Exhibition and Convention Centre in Murang Thong Thani, Thailand.
