Douz is located in the Southern Sahara in Tunisia. Nicknamed the 'Gateway to the Sahara', it has a population of around 12 000 semi-nomadics - people who live in houses but lead their animals through the desert in search of grass.
Douz is well known for its Thursday market, where nomads arrive for the customary trading and barter of camels, horses, crafts and jewellery. Most tourists come here to visit the Thursday Souq or to embark on a desert expedition.
Ksar Ghilane is 138kms southeast of Douz, surrounded by the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental. It is home to some of the finest desert scenery in Tunisia, as well as the Ksar (fort), the ancient Roman fort of Tisavar. The now-abandoned site was once a desert outpost on the Limes Tripolitanus defensive line.
