Istanbul, TURKEY
Airing Date: Apr 30th, 2002
Europe and Asia are separated only by the Bosphorus, a 32 kilometre waterway that has an average depth of just 60 metres.
A ferry ride along the Bosphorous is a must, and at a cost of 1 million Turkish Lira you may be thinking it's a little expensive, but fear not, that equals only around two Australian dollars.
Everyone here experiences what it's like to be a millionaire. A trip to the local spice markets is sure to have you spend a few million. The spice markets are open from Monday to Saturday and offer plenty of traditional treats and trinkets.
On the banks of the Bosphorus you will find five Ottoman palaces, four castles and many interesting villages to visit.
A trip to Topkapi Palace, one of the most exotic palaces will take you back to the time of Sultans and harems. Entry to the palace costs $14.
If you don't mind a bit of self service Turkey is the place to fill your tummy for just a couple of dollars. Much of the food and beverage here is offered on an honesty system, a relaxing change.
Even a simple walk down the street here proves entertaining; there is always a stall or an entertainer to grab your attention.
If you can afford just one splurge on your holiday try a Turkish bath. It's not too pricey and if you can afford it you'll be pampered and it's an experience you won't forget. If you are looking to save money a few places let you take your own soap and wash yourself.
