Winterlake Lodge, Alaska, USA
Airing Date: May 30th, 2005
We often talk about escaping the rat race here, and we've taken you all over the globe. But this has got to almost be the end of the earth - you're off the map.
Winterlake Lodge is air access only, and you'll have to land on the frozen lake. Hole up in a cosy log cabin, and snowmobile out into the endless snowfields for the kind of silence you'll never hear at home. There's a hole in the ice for fishing, and if you catch something good, you can learn how to cook it up the Alaskan way with the help of a famous chef. Bring your warmest boots and you're ready to eat by the fire, under the northern lights...
The Winterlake Lodge lies 318km northwest of Anchorage along Alaska's historic Iditarod Trail. The lodge sits on 15 acres overlooking Winter Lake, a finger-shaped 3 km lake where guests land by floatplane in the summer and ski-plane in the winter.
Winterlake offers seclusion and spectacular scenery; views of the Trimble Glacier and the beginnings of the Rainy Pass are visible from the lake. Behind the lodge, Wolverine Mountain offers intriguing hiking and wildlife viewing. There are many species of Alaskan birds, wildflowers and berries that are difficult to see in other locales.
Pretty much every Alaskan winter activity that you can think of is on offer at Winterlake. This includes ice fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snow picnics, bonfires, and snowmobiling. Be sure to participate in the official state sport of dog mushing through the snow - it's one ride you'll never forget.
Gourmet meals will be created by your hostess Kirsten Dixon, who is one of the most prominent chefs in Alaska. She's well-known for her take on traditional Alaskan cuisine.
Then you can relax and enjoy the magnificence of the natural phenomenon known as the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights have been described in ancient times by the Eskimos, American Indians, world explorers, and even mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible!
