Talkeetna, Alaska, USA
Airing Date: Aug 22nd, 2005
Talkeetna is the town believed to be the inspiration behind television show Northern Exposure.
With only 400 permanent residents, Talkeetna has managed to retain most of its original Alaskan flavour, despite a constant flow of tourists.
Talkeetna Roadhouse was built in 1917, opened as a roadhouse in 1944 and now provides good food and adequate, if not luxurious, lodgings.
Breakfast menus include traditional favorites with a local twist: pan-scrambled bacon and eggs with fried potatoes, sourdough hotcakes, and biscuits with reindeer sausage gravy.
The Roadhouse is an important piece of Alaskan history and no visit to Talkeetna is complete without a meal there.
But Alaska is all about remoteness and Denali is one of the last great wilderness areas, offering visitors glacial valleys and mountains.
Denali National Park & Preserve features North America's highest mountain, Mount McKinley. Denali covers more than 6 million acres and encompasses a complete sub-arctic eco-system with large mammals such as grizzly bears, wolves, and moose.
You can see Denali from the air on a flightseeing with Rust's flying service tour. Hank Rust founded Rust's Flying Service in 1963 and today the business is still run by Hank, Todd and Suzanne Rust. Their flight takes you close to Mt. McKinley plus the Sheldon Amphitheater, beautiful Ruth Glacier, and the Great Gorge.
