Alisa Camplin's Lake Placid, USA
Airing Date: Aug 26th, 2002
In upstate New York in the town of Lake Placid, Alisa provides a personal tour of the town where she spends half the year in training.
Lake Placid is both a country retreat for wealthy New Yorkers and a summer training ground for some of the world's most elite athletes. Although she is a Melbournian, Alisa has been living and training in Lake Placid for the past six months.
The first stop on Alisa's itinerary is Aroma Round, the Team Austria house for the 1980 Olympics. Today, the Olympic rings logo is still emblazed on the floor, but the house is now a popular restaurant. Placing the training diet aside, today Alisa enjoys a breakfast of french toast with maple syrup.
Alisa spends most of her time in Lake Placid playing sport, but she sometimes trades the skis for a bobsled. The next stop on Alisa's tour is Mt Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex, where a summer bobsled ride is the key attraction. Here the bobsleds race down the track at a speedy 70 kilometres an hour.
Alisa and Tom's final stop is Lake Placid's Olympic Jumping Centre, where intermediate skiers can try aerial ski jumping. Of course, there's no snow in the summer, but the jumps end in a swimming pool.
Accommodation in Lake Placid is reasonably priced, with the Maple Leaf Inn offering a variety of rooms within walking distance of the lake's restaurants and shopping centres.
