Aspen Ski Fields, Colorado, USA
Airing Date: Nov 14th, 2005
The story of Aspen is one of rags to riches. In the 1880s silver was discovered in Aspen and the town quickly grew into one of Colorado's great boomtowns.
Less than two decades later, gold replaced silver as the foundation of the U.S. currency. By the 1930s, the population of Aspen had dwindled to less than 100. It wasn't until after WWII that Aspen discovered its calling as a ski town. Crowds flock to the Rocky Mountain town because of its reputation as the place to be seen and the place to see others who are hoping to be seen. It also has some of the best skiing in the country plus a great aprs-ski atmosphere.
Aspen is actually four mountains called Aspen-Snowmass. Of all Aspen's mountains, Snowmass is the biggest, and it has most of the ski runs. Try the Big Burn for the widest open runs in the west, or Hanging Valley for a wild ride and an incomparable view. Snowmass is also a snowboarder's haven, with a Super Dragon half pipe and the world's longest terrain park.
With all the wealth that Aspen attracts and the superb skiing it's not cheap. A lift pass costs from $80 to $100 a day, but for that you get access to the four mountains and no lift queues.
Skiing aside, something you are not likely to miss is John Barnes' 'Ultimate Taxi'. John offers 30 minute rides around Aspen in his 1978 yellow cab, which has been transformed into a moving theatre complete with lasers, black lights, rainbow glasses, neon and fog effects.
When it's time for a bite head to Woody Creek Tavern, a laid back burger place near the river where you can get a good meal for $25 or less. They also do Mexican food and margaritas. The walls are covered with Wild West memorabilia and hundreds of photographs - and you may even spot a celebrity or two.
With a choice of accommodation ranging from to lodges to amazing five star hotels, Aspen is not just for the rich and famous.
