Golden Isles, Georgia, USA
Airing Date: Apr 2nd, 2002
Visiting these islands gives you an idea of how the millionaires of the late 19th and early 20th centuries used to live and holiday.
On Jekyll Island you can stay in the old holiday homes of families like the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts and the Pulitzers, as in patron of the Pulitzer Prize.
The grand history of the area can best be experienced on a tour of the historic district. How you explore is up - walking, tram or horse and carriage tours are all on offer.
Highlights include the Rockefeller's old 8-bedroom holiday shack, and the Jekyll Island Club.
In its heyday the Jekyll Island Club was the richest and most exclusive club in the world, a place where men had conversations which could change the course of history. It's also reputed to have a resident ghost.
Take a 10 minute boat and you arrive at the island of Little Saint Simons. This is a family-owned island that's been turned into a holiday retreat which caters for only 30 guests at a time.
The greatest attraction of the island is its unspoilt natural landscape featuring pristine woodlands and 11 kilometres of undeveloped beaches.
Guests can explore this wilderness via interpretive nature and wildlife tours, horseback trails, canoeing, beach picnics and fishing.
Another highlight is the southern food and in keeping with old fashioned southern hospitality all the guests on the island eat together just like one big happy family.
